What can I do with meteorology?
Of course, meteorologists create weather forecasts, but they also work in research, create survey reports, program climate models and evaluate measurement data. They apply the scientific methods learned during their studies from the natural sciences in professional practice.
Meteorologists work in many different areas related to weather, climate and atmosphere:
- in weather and climate research (at universities or research institutes (Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI), European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), etc.)
- at weather services (Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) or private weather services, such as wetteronline)
- Weather advice (weather advice for aviation, weather advice for agriculture, geoinformation service of the Bundeswehr) and weather media (wetteronline)
- Environmental authorities, environmental measurement technology
- Earth Observation Satellite Operator (EUMETSAT)
- solar and wind energy industry
- in the insurance industry
- as a meteorologist you are trained in different programming languages for evaluating large amounts of data, which means that you can quickly be retrained in other areas that require such skills
In the following short films, 10 alumni with a degree in meteorology give a small insight into their profession.
